White Christmas in the Irish Countryside

During the Christmas of 2010, there was a "big freeze" in Ireland. It was cold, but it was also a photographer's paradise. I can still remember this day and the way the frost covered every single branch of every tree - it was amazing. I wish I'd taken so many more photos.

I took this photo in Derryavena, one of my favorite spots near Coalisland in County Tyrone. I wonder what this year's Christmas will be like?

What a beautiful shot, Elizabeth.  The snow and frost on the stones highlight the intricate jigsaw of the wall.  I laughed when you said you wished you had taken more photos.  Every time I look through some of my photos I regret not taking more, especially on beautiful snowy or sunny days in Ireland.  I have plenty of pictures with a foggy, raindrop covered lens, but I always fail to get carried away when the weather is just right.

Thank you, Mairead! I've got some larger capacity memory cards this year, so there may be no limit to the picture taking! ;)

That winter was incredible for photographs! It was like that on Christmas Day in Tipperary too, everything frozen solid at -10 degrees, it was beautiful. Merry Christmas to you and your family xxx

I remember that -- it was on my first trip ever to Ireland! I arrived between Christmas and New Year's and spent two weeks traveling around the country. I was in awe (partly because it meant it never rained during my trip!) and my most beautiful photos came from Killarney -- the lake in the national park there froze over, the mountains were snow-topped and the trees were iced over. It was even more beautiful than I'd expected Ireland to be!
