Northern Style Irish Wheaten Bread

Although I love fadge, wheaten bread comes a close second. But it has to be northern style.  What do I mean by northern style? Well, this is not your typical soda bread recipe – it’s packed with nutritious ingredients like whole wheat (also known as whole meal) flour and steel cut oats (known in Ireland as pinhead oats) is slightly sweet and and has a crumbly consistency unlike other soda breads I’ve made.  It’s so hearty that it makes a great breakfast all on its own but it’s also part of the traditional Ulster Fry.

I often sprinkle steel cut oats on top of the batter for an extra crunch.

I buy my steel cut oats at Trader Joe’s. You can also order them from Bob’s Red Mill.

Many wheaten bread recipes don’t call for an egg, but since this one does and I’m happy with the result, I think I’ll stick with it.

I used three small loaf pans rather than the one called for in the recipe – thinking I might freeze some (yeah, right).

It’s tasty in so many ways – but I think my favorite way to eat wheaten bread is to toast it and spread some KerryGold butter on top…perfection.

I'll have to try this recipe. My traditional Irish soda bread calls for white flour. It's yummy, but not particularly nutritious.

Oh, this looks SO yummy! Fabulous photography. Thanks for the comments on my blog, and I'll be stopping by again to try out these recipes.
Does it taste more like a cake bread or a bread bread? I would like to try this recipe bcos it's very interesting.

Meri - glad you stopped by - would love to hear how yours comes out!

The Cooking Ninja - it doesn't taste sweet like cake; it's dense, but has a slight crumb to it. Try it - you won't be disappointed!

Shirley - thanks for your visit! I am happy with the photos, too...I am enjoying the photography as much as the baking!
What beautiful bread! I sometimes try to make Irish Soda bread at home, but I just can't get the flour here in Belgium. At least that's my excuse...

This is so interesting with the steel cut oats on top. GORGEOUS.

Just got back to the states from Randalstown two days ago, brought back 3 wee loafs of wheaten.  I am enjoying a piece and a cup of tea at the very moment!  I LOVE this bread, ate a wee piece every morning toasted.  I will be trying your recipe!!!

Hi Karin - I hope you had a fantastic trip! The wheaten bread is addictive, isn't it? I love it toasted, too. Sometimes I toast it lightly, butter it and then put some good Irish cheddar cheese on top and place it under the broiler for a minute or two. Heaven. Let me know how the recipe works for you. :)
